Varicose Veins – What Can You Do About Them

Do you have varicose veins or do you suspect you have them? You’re not alone; this disruption in normal circulation is common. Varicose veins are a big health problem and the older you get, the greater the risk that you might develop them. Once you get past the age of 70 – or much sooner for women – the chances of developing varicose veins increases. For some people varicose veins are a significant impediment to the quality of life. They cause pain and rarely, they can cause serious complications. For some people, the physical effects of varicose veins are troublesome, but it is the appearance of varicose veins that is most upsetting, and there’s no denying that varicose veins are not attractive.

Most of you probably don’t have a medical background, but varicose veins are like a lot of the pathologies that plague us. Physicians have a reasonably good idea what the causes are, but they aren’t exactly sure who will get them and why. They have a reasonably good idea of how to treat the disease, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the best way to handle cases of varicose veins.

They know that certain therapies work, but they are not sure whom the best candidates are and for how long the beneficial effects of the treatments will last. And finally, in many cases varicose veins are not completely unavoidable, but poor health habits can certainly make you more susceptible to varicose veins, poor health habits can make the ones you have worse and poor health habits will make you more susceptible to getting varicose veins at a younger age.

Fortunately, the news is not all bad. Preventative health habits may decrease your risk of developing varicose veins, and if varicose veins are inevitable, they can slow the onset. Some people respond to conservative (i.e. non-medical, non-surgical) interventions. If those don’t work, there are a multitude of safe and effective treatments available.
